Absence Practice

VANGUARD ABSENCE PRACTICE

At Vanguard, regular attendance in all classes is an important routine that supports lifelong learning habits and career success.  It is expected that all students will arrive to class on time and attend all classes. If unable to for whatever reason, we expect the student and/or family will communicate with the Primary Support Worker (or Office) with essential details of the absence prior to the beginning of their class.

The Primary Support Worker will try to communicate parent excused absences prior to class starting, otherwise the teacher will default to recording it as an unexcused absence.  The Primary Support Worker will communicate to Counselling staff any student appointments made during class-time to ensure documentation of therapeutic interventions and will monitor any specific classroom/assignment impacts.

In most circumstances, if the child is not in class at the start of the lesson or has not engaged the learning outcomes of the class, they will be marked absent by the teacher.  All absence patterns will be monitored by administration and counselling staff and concerns will be communicated with student, guardians and Primary Support Workers.

Parents/guardians can monitor attendance by logging onto MyEd portal. We do not have an automated calling system that notifies guardians of absences.

IT IS ESSENTIAL FOR EVERYONE’S SAFETY THAT ATTENDANCE IS TAKEN SERIOUSLY.
